“Hanging Up On Unemployment Benefit Applicants”

When it rains, it pours. Don’t lose a job in California. Because you will have a hard time calling the state for help.

In one month (January) 12.6 million calls were made to the state’s hotline for unemployment insurance benefits. Yes, 12.6 million in one month.

Sadly, 62% of those trying to call couldn’t get through. This is just another way for our society to increase homelessness.

Employment is a significant part of preventing homelessness. Having unemployment benefits is a safety net for those who lose their jobs. Looks like 62% of those losing jobs do not have that safety net.

I've worked on a theatrical project in San Antonio that led me to a blog with recorded stories from those within the homeless community: http://atticrep.wordpress.com/audioforum/

Just thought it would be of interest!

Why can't the homeless get real career training. Dead-end jobs keep people homeless.
